Crohn's Disease Q & A

What is Crohn’s disease?

Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that may affect any part of your digestive tract, from your mouth to your anus. With Crohn’s disease, the inflammation may affect the deep layers of your digestive tract and cause severe and debilitating symptoms.

Though researchers are still investigating the underlying cause of Crohn’s disease, it’s theorized that the IBD may develop from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. You may be at risk of developing Crohn’s disease if it runs in your family.

What are Crohn’s disease symptoms?

Your Crohn’s disease symptoms may range from mild to severe and vary based on the part of your digestive system affected by the chronic inflammatory condition. Common Crohn’s disease symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Blood in your stool
  • Mouth sores
  • Fatigue
  • Unexpected weight loss

In addition to your abdominal symptoms, you may also develop joint pain or skin rashes with Crohn’s disease.

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, or any other changes in bowel habits, contact Hagerstown Gastroenterology to schedule an evaluation.

How is Crohn’s disease diagnosed?

Dr. Choudari conducts a comprehensive evaluation to diagnose Crohn’s disease. During your exam, he asks detailed questions about your symptoms, as well as your medical and family history, and conducts a physical.

Dr. Choudari may also request diagnostic tests such as:

  • Blood tests
  • Stool test
  • CT scan and/or MRI
  • Colonoscopy
  • Endoscopy

He uses the information gathered during your exam and testing to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and provide a formal diagnosis.

How is Crohn’s disease treated?

Dr. Choudari develops personalized treatment plans for Crohn’s disease to minimize flare-ups and improve quality of life. No single treatment works for all and Dr. Choudari works closely with you to develop a plan that helps keep your symptoms in remission.

Crohn’s disease treatment may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Immune system suppressors
  • Antibiotics
  • Pain relievers
  • Anti-diarrheal medications
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Diet modification

If conservative measures fail to alleviate your Crohn’s disease symptoms, Dr. Choudari may recommend surgery to remove the damaged portion of your digestive tract.
